Middlebury Skatepark Project

The Middlebury Skatepark Project is an effort led by a thoughtful and committed group of Middlebury and surrounding ACSD town citizens to plan, design, and build a free high-quality public skatepark for the entire community. We recognize and value the physical and mental health benefits that outdoor recreation provides and seek to expand current recreational opportunities and programming for our community. We recognize and value the social and emotional benefits for individuals and groups of all ages and disciplines (skateboard, bike, scooter) when they challenge themselves – expressing themselves creatively, managing risk, gaining confidence, and persevering. We recognize and value the socio-economic benefits to the wider community of providing a safe and accessible space to participate in relatively inexpensive, unstructured sport. We are looking to partner with diverse  stakeholders throughout all phases of the project,including The Town of Middlebury, Middlebury College, Addison County Supervisory District, local businesses, local service organizations and non profits, and local and regional economic development organizations.

Desired Timeline: {Timeline:36}
Desired Partnership Length: I am flexible on the length of the partnership
Desired Location: Virtual participation is okay, but if safety protocols allow, I would prefer in-person

As noted above, we are looking at this project through many lenses: health (physical and mental well-being), inclusivity (alternative to structured team sports and the relatively low cost of action sports), and community-building (the opportunity for multi-age, multi-gender, unsupervised free play).

We currently have committees working on Fundraising, Community Partnerships, Outreach and Project Management. We would be interested in working with faculty and/or with a class to help with health equity, communications/storytelling, and/or community-building via unstructured play and risk-taking/confidence-building with peers. Areas where we see a good fit for collaboration: health, journalism/film-making, social media/marketing, sociology, psychology, political science, etc. We would also welcome support in architecture/engineering and landscape design for the physical skatepark.

Areas where we see a good fit for collaboration with students are similar to above: health, journalism/film-making, social media/marketing, sociology, psychology, political science, etc. We would also welcome support in architecture/engineering and landscape design for the physical structure and surrounding site.

{Key Learning Goals for Students:18}

We will continue to work on this project throughout the summer and we expect the total process to take 1-2 years to complete. Our first letter of interest for one of the major grants is due in September and another major application is due in January. We would love to partner in multiple semesters with multiple classes and/or to have a consistent partner throughout the process in an established student group or organization.
